Melghat has captured my mind and soul since 12 years. I have visited this place countless times and always it has something new to amaze me. Melghat Tiger Reserve is around 275Km from Indore and it is very rich in biodiversity.

One thing which makes it most potential Tiger Reserve of India is, it has everything for everyone. You can enjoy Summers for wildlife sighting, winters as hill station and birding paradise, rainy season as rain forest with hundreds of big and small waterfalls. You can do kayaking, adventure activities, day safari, night safari, machaan stay, trekking etc. Apart from nature tourism it is best for archaeological exploration and historical monuments. In short it is complete package for all your holiday needs.

About Melghat : It was declared as tiger reserve and was among the first nine tiger reserves notified in 1973-74 under the Project Tiger. Spread across 2768.5 Sqkm this Tiger reserve accommodates more than 700 types of flora & fauna including Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Indian Gaur, Flying Squirrel and other carnivorous and herbivorous animals.

  • October to December : Best for Birding, Scenic Beauty, Clouds, Pleasant Mornings, Waterfalls.
  • January to March : Good for Wildlife Safari, Trekking, Historical Monuments, Archaeological Structures.
  • April to June : Peak season for Wildlife and Tiger Safari, Historical Monuments, Archaeological Structures.
  • July to September : Wildlife Safaris are closed in this season, Best for Trekking, Waterfalls, Scenic Beauty.

How to reach Melghat :

  • By Road : Majorly melghat can be accessed from two sides, Either from Dharni to Harisal and onward or Akot to Shahnur and onward.
  • By Railway : For Chikhaldara/Semadoh/Kolkas/ Harisal- Alight at Badnera Junction (10Km) from Amravati on Mumbai – Nagpur – Kolkata route. For Narnala- Alight at Akola Junction on Mumbai –Nagpur- Kolkata route.Also for various places proximity is there from Khandwa on Mumbai – Bhopal route & also from Betul on Nagpur – Delhi route.
  • By Air: Nearest airport is Nagpur and Indore. From there you need to travel by road.

It is always suggested to go with professional and knowledgeable tour operators to increase the chances of wildlife sighting and get in depth information about the place. It will also save you from paying extra cost to locals and get into any possible trouble.

Important Tips :

  1. Electricity cuttings are frequent in this area hence carrying torch and mobile power bank will give extra advantage.
  2. Mobile network is limited and will not be available in most of the area.
  3. This area is remote and less populated. Traveling in night or with small groups are not advisable. Try to go with profession tour operators who know the area.
  4. Your vehicle should be reliable, make sure you have trouble free vehicle with you. Expect path-holes and frequent flat tires.
  5. Tubeless Tires and Puncture Repair kit will be added advantage.
  6. Not recommended but if you happen to drive in night in forest area, make sure you have your camera ready and it should have necessary settings to capture any wild animal as soon as you see it.
  7. Stop in intervals and feel the surroundings.
  8. Talk with local people and try to experience local food.
  9. For Tigers, Shahnur gate is best. Book it.
  10. If you are travelling with family, make sure you do prior booking and drive less during night. On other hand, if you are travelling with friends, don’t do prior bookings and drive any time you like. This will allow you to explore more and create more memories.
  11. A multi-tool and a powerful search light is must, spend good amount on it.
  12. Never walk in forest in night unless you are experienced tracker of wildlife.
  13. Bring general medicines with you i.e. for vomit, motion sickness, headache, fever & Iodex spray.
  14. Stay is neat and clean and safe for families.
